Since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, the Vikings have won a staggering 14 NFC
Central Division Championships. Over that time, the Vikings have made the playoffs 21
times, more than any other team, with the exception of Dallas (21).
Since the merger, the Vikings have had an amazing 15-1 season, three extraordinary 12-2 seasons, one 11-2-1
season and one 11-3 season. (The Vikings also finished the 1969 season 12-2).
The Vikings have had only one season over that time in which they won less than a third
of their games. Unlike most teams in the modern football era, the Vikings have never
had a significant period of mediocrity. The Packers, for example, were the disgrace of
the NFL for half-a-generation during the 1970s and 1980s. The Vikings have truly been
one of the most consistent and successful organizations in the NFL.
Since the merger, the Vikings have won three NFC Championships and played in three
Super Bowls. (They also won the NFL Championship and made a Super Bowl appearance in
1969). Those Super Bowls were IV, VIII, IX, and XI. The strongest Viking teams of all-time never made it to the Super Bowl, a victim
of a blown call in the last seconds of an NFC Championship game against Dallas, and the 1998 squad which lost the NFC Championship game in Overtime to Atlanta.
